The Carcass

Golden jackals at a kill

A dead deer in open grass in the early light, and one golden jackal standing over it. For a while it has the carcass to itself. Then a second animal walks in, and two more watch from the edge of the clearing.

What follows is a lesson in how jackals settle things: a sudden fight beside the kill, jaws open and bodies low, a stand-off that lasts seconds, and then a truce, with three animals feeding at the rib cage as if nothing had happened. The sequence ends with a tug-of-war over a strip of hide.
